Operations Near Structures

You are inspecting a 300-foot tower. Under 107.51, how high may the unmanned aircraft fly while it remains within 400 feet of the tower?

  • A.400 feet AGL, the same as anywhere else
  • B.Up to 700 feet AGL, which is 400 feet above the tower's top
  • C.Up to 300 feet AGL, capped at the tower's height
Correct answer

B. Up to 700 feet AGL, which is 400 feet above the tower's top

Why

Section 107.51(b) allows flight up to 400 feet above a structure's uppermost limit when the aircraft stays within 400 feet of that structure, so a 300-foot tower permits flight up to 700 feet AGL nearby. Leaving that 400-foot bubble means the plain 400-foot AGL cap applies again.
